Bay-Atlantic Symphony Music Director Jed Gaylinannounces our 2010 education series:

HOW MUSIC TALKS:
Rhythm and Melody

The very popular
“How Music Talks” series is offered free to school-aged students. For our 2010 concert, Maestro Gaylin has paired works, each emphasizing a different element of how music talks. Mexican composer Revueltas’ Night of the Mayas is a dramatic, pulsating rhythmic piece in the vein of Stravinsky, and perhaps even more earthy. In contrast, the Brahms’ Double Concerto is steeped in lyricism and melody. Two tremendously gifted soloists share the stage with each other and the orchestra: BAS concert master Ruotao Mao, and BAS principal cellist Jie Jin. Young audiences will see not only how music “talks” to them, but how the two soloists virtually hold a conversation with notes instead of words.  That conversation is deepened and expanded to include the whole orchestra and the audience. Each work also speaks from a different culture—one Latin American and one European—with a large contrast in effect upon the listener. Yet, they are both masterpieces in their expression, and show the versatility as well as the universality of the musical language.

Free tickets are made possible from donations.
